VARICOSE VEINS

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that often appear blue or purple. They are most common in the legs, but can also occur in other parts of the body. Varicose veins are caused by a weakening of the valves in the veins, which allows blood to pool in the veins and enlarge them.

Causes of varicose veins

There are a number of factors that can contribute to the development of varicose veins, including:

  • Age: As we age, the valves in our veins can weaken and become less effective.
  • Gender: Women are more likely to develop varicose veins than men. This is because hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone, can relax the vein walls.
  • Pregnancy: During pregnancy, the blood volume in the body increases, which can put extra pressure on the veins.
  • Family history: If you have a family history of varicose veins, you are more likely to develop them yourself.
  • Obesity: Excess weight puts extra pressure on the veins.
  • Occupation: Jobs that require standing or sitting for long periods of time can increase the risk of varicose veins.

Treatment of varicose veins

There are a number of treatment options available for varicose veins, depending on the severity of the condition. Treatment options include:

  • Self-care measures: Self-care measures can help to relieve the symptoms of varicose veins and reduce the risk of complications. These measures include:
    • Elevating the legs when sitting or lying down
    • Wearing compression stockings
    • Exercising regularly
    • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Medical treatment: Medical treatment options for varicose veins include:
    • Sclerotherapy: A solution is injected into the vein to cause it to collapse and close.
    • Endovenous thermal ablation: A laser or radiofrequency energy is used to heat and close the vein.
    • Surgery: Surgery may be recommended for severe cases of varicose veins.

Prevention of varicose veins

There are a number of things you can do to reduce your risk of developing varicose veins, including:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Exercising regularly
  • Avoiding standing or sitting for long periods of time
  • Wearing loose-fitting clothing and comfortable shoes
  • Elevating your legs when sitting or lying down

If you are concerned about varicose veins, talk to your doctor. They can help you to develop a treatment plan that is right for you.
